No longer relegated to nautical theme interiors, stripes have the power to transform any interior design scheme. Stripes add an incredible visual impact, they are as timeless as they are eye catching.
From bold broad lines, to tailored pinstripes, stripes are suitable for any room in your home. While often seen as traditional, stripes can also be used to create a dramatic and edgy, contemporary look. It all depends on the application.
Stripes and their innate lineal structure provide a perfect foundation to layer from. Add colour, texture and other patterns to accompany your stripe to create a perfectly balanced interior. A floral pattern always looks stunning next to a stripe, and how about floaty organic linen curtains in a stripe? A winner in our books.
It is therefore no surprise the team at Sarah Vivian Home are huge fans of the stripe. We love them for their diversity, and have used them in so many ways to achieve so many different outcomes for our clients.
The clean lines of a stripe add instant drama and uplift the energy of a space. Depending on the space, an accent cushion, hall runner, or gorgeous linen curtains may be all you need.
Alternatively use them as the foundation in a space. Paint stripes on a wall, use them vertically or horizontally. Let your imagination go. But do remember this simple trick, less can be more - such is the power of the stripe.

Space enhancing
Stripes have the ability to redirect the eye and can create the illusion of space. In a small room, vertical stripes can make a ceiling look higher. While using horizontal stripes can make the room look wider. If you are wanting to direct the eye to a focal point, stripes can help you achieve that.
Colourful vs monochromatic stripes
Colorful stripes are playful, vibrant and cheeky. They can be modern or traditional depending on the application. A black and white stripe is elegant and classical, yet also contemporary and always, always fashionable.
Consider your home, it’s age and interior, who lives there and what you are wanting to achieve - this will determine which way you go!
New to stripes
If you are new to using stripes in your interior decor, it is easy to start small with minimal investment. Add a couple of cushions to your sofa (which is more often or not a solid colour and needs breaking up). Try adding in some stripped accessories - a vase or bowl. Alternatively, start with a small room, such as a powder room and add vertical stripes to the walls, or add a horizontal striped tile to the floor of a bathroom. These can really open up a space. It’s not hard to get started with a stripe.
Consider the width of your stripe
For a really bold statement, wide stripes certainly are the winner here. A wide stripe looks amazing in a kids room, or painted down a hallway. They can be incredibly playful and when layered up with contrasting patterns and textures to create a stunning interior.
Thinner stripes are often seen as more traditional. Your pinstripe for example. A thin stripe also creates real impact with it’s elegance.
